65 Year 11 students from St. John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College enjoyed a unique and immersive learning experience at Beamish Museum. The visit transported them back to the 1900s town, where they took part in an exciting investigation into the mysterious death of Eva Smith from An Inspector Calls.

This innovative trip—the first of its kind for any school—was designed to deepen students’ understanding of the historical context behind their GCSE English Literature text. By exploring the world Priestley imagined, pupils engaged with the themes of social responsibility, class, and morality in a hands-on way that brought the play to life.

Our students were exceptional throughout the day, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect, and curiosity. Beamish staff praised their manners, engagement, and behaviour, making them fantastic ambassadors for St. John’s.

Experiences like this reflect our commitment to enriching learning beyond the classroom, helping students connect literature to real-world history and develop a deeper appreciation for the ideas that shape society.
