St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College is “A Learning Community Guided by Gospel Values.” We believe in promoting and supporting every student in our care to develop their God-given gifts and talents. Support of the less advantaged members of the school community is at the heart of our mission and we are committed to enhance the support we can provide to further improve the progress and attainment of our students through:
• Facilitating students’ access to the curriculum
• Facilitating students’ access to the broader experiences provided within the school context
• Providing appropriate support and intervention within the school setting
• Facilitating student access to enrichment activities to support learning
Our aim is that all students, including those who are less advantaged, can participate fully in high-quality learning and all enrichment activities that are offered by the school. We endeavour to adapt teaching and learning opportunities and activities to individual needs. Through consistently good teaching, excellent teacher-student relationships and an emphasis on developing high levels of literacy, we aim to ensure that all students can fulfil their potential.
If students have good attendance records and are encouraged to engage fully in learning, we believe our young people can succeed and excel with high-quality teaching. Our approach is in accordance with our core values and ethos, and is based on the implementation of research-based approaches outlined in guidance reports from the Education Endowment Foundation.
Pupil premium funding will also be used to support continued staff professional development to ensure that high quality teaching and learning approaches are consistent and tailored to individual needs. This will promote greater student engagement with the curriculum, including best practice for literacy development. We invest heavily in literacy tools and resources to identify and address academic barriers to learning. This is complemented by school-led tutoring to address knowledge gaps.
Regular reports will be presented to the governors of the school on the progress of students eligible for pupil premium funding and on the impact of the strategies implemented.
Our Pupil Premium Lead is Dave Athey, who monitors the progress and attendance of pupil premium students, as well as coordinates the provision of resources and the support available to targeted students.
