Today marks World Religion Day, a global event dedicated to promoting understanding, tolerance, and unity among people of all faiths — and those of no faith. At St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College in Bishop Auckland, we embraced this special occasion by exploring a range of world religions throughout the week in our RE lessons.

Our aim was to help students appreciate the diversity of belief around the world, strengthen mutual respect, and deepen their understanding of how different faiths contribute to a more harmonious society.

Year 7: Exploring Diwali and Rangoli Patterns

Year 7 focused on Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. They learned about the tradition of creating rangoli patterns, which are designed on the floors of homes to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Students explored the meaning behind the patterns and enjoyed discovering the symbolism used in Hindu celebrations.

Year 8: The Lotus Flower in Buddhism

Year 8 turned their attention to Buddhism, studying the significance of the lotus flower. They found that the lotus represents spiritual enlightenment, purity, and rebirth. Through discussion and reflection, students explored how this symbol connects to Buddhist teachings and the journey toward inner peace.

Year 9: The Five Pillars of Islam and Islamic Art

Year 9 studied the Five Pillars of Islam — the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and daily life. They also explored traditional Islamic art, learning that Muslims are forbidden from portraying images of God, the Prophet Muhammad, or other prophets. Instead, intricate patterns and geometric designs are used as a form of spiritual expression and focus in worship. The students enjoyed creating and analysing these designs as part of their learning.

Year 10: Immersive Jewish Experience at Bishop Auckland College

The week concluded with a memorable experience for a group of Year 10 students, who visited Bishop Auckland College to learn first‑hand about Jewish practices. Using the college’s impressive Immersive Suite, pupils were able to deepen their understanding of Judaism through interactive learning, bringing their RE studies to life in a vivid and meaningful way.

At St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College in Bishop Auckland, World Religion Day provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to broaden their understanding of global faiths, celebrate diversity, and reflect on the importance of respect and unity.

A huge well done to all students from Year 7 to 10 for their engagement, curiosity, and thoughtful contributions throughout the week.
