Each year around 20-40 students have the opportunity to travel to a developing country to complete a building project and teach local children. Experiences such as these are wonderful and often life-changing.
The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s global programme to study and work abroad. The scheme provides funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.
This funding allows organisations to provide students, learners and pupils with the chance to develop new skills, gain vital international experience and boost their employability. They can also develop a wide range of soft skills, language skills and a better understanding of other cultures. Organisations can build relationships with international peers and gain fresh ideas.
Students can apply to do a lifeguard qualification. Many students use this qualification to secure part-time work at St. John’s, supporting private swim lessons for the local community.
Students have the opportunity to complete their DofE Gold Award. This involves volunteering, developing various skills and completing an expedition. This award is well regarded by universities and employers.
Achieving leadership qualifications help students to boost their CVs. These qualifications are available through many subject areas at post-16. They also carry valuable UCAS points.
In 2021 we launched a programme for Sixth Form students who are considering a career in teaching. Students have been able to study some of the theory behind teaching to allow them to support in lessons and gain invaluable experience.
Each student will complete a one week work experience placement in Year 12. This experience will develop personal skills and support UCAS applications and CVs. All students receive independent careers advice from a level 6 advisor as well as accessing information from university visits and external speakers.
Our Student Leadership Team comprises of students from all year groups and is led by Year 12 and 13 students. As well as meeting regularly to make positive changes to our learning community, they are also responsible for leading wellbeing activities, assisting with school tours and interviews and taking part in promotional events for the school.
Students in Year 12 have the opportunity to attend training to become CAFOD Young Leaders. The training equips students with the necessary skills to lead, raise awareness and organise charitable events.
Students have the opportunity to join Rugby, Football and Netball clubs. For those interested in the Arts, we have our MADD Performing Arts group as well as theatre trips and a Sixth Form Glee Club.
Various department run trips and visits to support the curriculum. In addition, students are welcome to join whole school trips such as the Ski trip, Wimbledon events and our Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
