St John’s Choir Shines at Durham Music Service Competition and Prepares for The Glasshouse Performance

Last week, our wonderful choir proudly represented St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form at the Durham Music Service Secondary School Choir of the Year Competition. The event took place in the stunning chapel at Ushaw College, creating a truly inspiring atmosphere for all involved.

For our 12 new choir members, this was their first public performance, and we couldn’t be prouder of the confidence and talent they displayed while competing against five other secondary schools. Although we didn’t take home the trophy this year, we are thrilled to announce that we will be performing at The Glasshouse in February as finalists from last year’s competition.

A huge congratulations to Durham Johnston School for their incredible winning performance of Will Todd’s Softly. We look forward to sharing the stage with you in February!

Bringing Our Community Together: Parishioners’ Christmas Dinner

Our festive celebrations began last week with our much-loved annual Parishioners’ Christmas Dinner.

We were delighted to welcome over 40 local parishioners into school for a delicious lunch, accompanied by entertainment from some of our talented students.

This event is always a highlight of our school calendar and a wonderful way to strengthen our connection with the local community.

Celebrating Attendance and Advent Spirit

Congratulations to Daniel from 7J, our first Advent Attendance Adventure winner, who received a £25 voucher for achieving 100% attendance at the start of December.

We are also pleased to announce our parent winner, Miss Jackson (parent of Louis in Year 8), who received a £50 voucher.

Our next two draws will take place on Monday for last week’s 100% attendance, and the final two draws will be held on Friday, where one lucky student will have the chance to win a £100 voucher!

Recognising Kindness: Good Puds Awards

Last week, we continued to celebrate students who were ‘caught’ being Good Puds—those who spread kindness, act as role models, and go above and beyond to help others.

These students were nominated by staff for:

  • Supporting friends
  • Offering help to teachers
  • Caring for the school environment
  • Showing compassion to others

We are proud to reward these acts of kindness and encourage everyone to keep making a positive difference.
