Overview
Students from St John’s Catholic School in Bishop Auckland took part in an international educational visit to Singapore, supported by the UK Government’s Turing Scheme. The programme aimed to broaden horizons, develop future‑ready skills, and provide insight into education, innovation, and culture in a global context.
Travel and Arrival
Travelling from Heathrow, students arrived in one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities, quickly adapting to new surroundings and embracing the experience with confidence and maturity.
Academic and STEM Learning
The visit combined academic study with real‑world insight, with a strong focus on STEM and innovation. Students participated in a Minecraft Coding Workshop, developing problem‑solving, teamwork, and coding skills through interactive challenges.
Visits to Kok Fah Technology Farm and aquaponics facilities provided insight into sustainable agriculture, food security, and the role of technology in modern industries. At the Science Centre Singapore, students explored hands‑on exhibits that brought scientific concepts to life.
Higher Education and Future Pathways
Students visited the Singapore Institute of Management, where they toured the campus and attended a session on international study pathways through the University of London. This experience helped broaden their understanding of higher education opportunities beyond the UK.
Cultural Experiences
Alongside academic learning, students explored Singapore’s culture and key landmarks. Highlights included views from Mount Faber Peak, visits to Sentosa Island, the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands SkyPark, and a traditional bumboat river cruise offering a unique perspective of the city.
Time spent in local hawker markets allowed students to experience Singapore’s food culture while developing independence and confidence in new environments.

The visit was delivered in partnership with SLT Tours, who supported students throughout the programme and helped ensure a well‑structured and engaging experience.
Student Outcomes
Throughout the visit, students demonstrated enthusiasm, curiosity, and professionalism, representing St John’s positively. The programme supported the aims of the Turing Scheme by developing global awareness, building independence, strengthening STEM and employability skills, and widening understanding of opportunities beyond the UK.
