An Immersive Experience in the Heart of the Amazon

In June 2027, staff and students will travel to Iquitos, located in northern Peru at the very centre of the Amazon rainforest. While there, the group will take part in a wide range of charitable and cultural activities, including:

  • Supporting a building project that will directly improve conditions for local communities
  • Working alongside staff and students in a Peruvian school
  • Helping at a girls’ centre, providing essential support where it's most needed
  • Engaging with the rich culture of the region through traditional activities and community interaction

The work itself is hands‑on and varied—manual labour, teaching lessons, leading sporting sessions and more. Every student plays a meaningful role.

Students who have previously taken part often describe the Peru Project as “an exceptional and life‑changing experience.”

A Mission with Impact

The current Peru Mission was founded on 8th February 2012, with a clear objective: to improve conditions for the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the region. Although centred in Iquitos, its reach extends across Peru through close relationships with aid agencies and missionary groups.

While journeying deep into the Amazon, students gain a rare opportunity to:

  • Learn about unique animal and plant life
  • Interact with local tribes
  • Fish for piranhas
  • Handle anacondas
  • Explore the environmental issues affecting the rainforest, including deforestation and oil extraction

It is a powerful blend of service, education and adventure.

Culture, Creativity and Connection

Beyond the charitable and environmental aspects, the trip also offers a vibrant cultural experience. Sixth Form students will:

  • Learn indigenous dances
  • Develop a grasp of the local dialect
  • Create lasting memories—quite literally—by painting uplifting murals on the walls of the schools they help to build

The expedition encourages students to broaden their perspectives, develop resilience and form lasting bonds—with peers, staff and the communities they meet.

Looking Ahead to Peru 2027

The 2027 trip will take place at the end of June, but preparations begin now. This early stage is crucial for generating interest, building excitement and launching fundraising efforts that make the expedition possible.

For those considering joining the journey: this is more than a trip—it’s an education, an adventure and an opportunity to make a real difference.

St John’s is proud to continue its longstanding commitment to the Peru Project, and we look forward to seeing the next cohort of Sixth Form students embrace this extraordinary experience.
