This week, a group of enthusiastic Year 8 students from St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College, Bishop Auckland, took part in a truly enriching international experience through the Turing Scheme. Their visit to Geneva offered an exciting blend of science, global cooperation and cultural discovery — bringing classroom learning to life in remarkable ways.
A Brilliant Start to an International Adventure
The journey began smoothly with a flight from Newcastle Airport and an exciting arrival in Switzerland. Students settled in quickly and spent their first afternoon enjoying a boat tour on Lake Geneva, taking in the breathtaking scenery and soaking up Swiss life. The evening was a chance to share a meal, build friendships and reflect on a memorable first day.
Exploring Global Cooperation at the United Nations
On Monday, students visited the United Nations headquarters, gaining a fascinating insight into where global discussions and decisions take place. They learned how countries work together to tackle worldwide challenges, promote peace and support international development.
The afternoon took them to the History of Science Museum, where they explored early inventions and scientific ideas that have shaped how we understand the world today. The day finished with bowling and pizza — a well‑deserved chance to relax and enjoy time together.
A Day of Science, Humanity and Swiss Culture
Tuesday was a highlight for many of our St John’s students. The morning began at CERN, the world‑renowned centre for particle physics research. Students were captivated by the science behind the Large Hadron Collider and inspired by the pioneering work taking place there every day.
The afternoon visit to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum brought a powerful change in focus. Students learned about the organisation’s critical role in protecting human dignity during conflict and crisis, sparking thoughtful discussions about compassion, justice and global responsibility.
To finish the day on a lighter note, students enjoyed a Swiss chocolate tasting — a cultural experience that everyone loved!
A Meaningful Experience With Lasting Impact
As the trip came to an end, it was clear how much students had gained from the experience. The aims of the Turing Scheme — building confidence, resilience, cultural awareness and aspiration — were evident in every activity. Our students embraced each opportunity with maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm.
They also represented St John’s and the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust exceptionally well. Staff praised their behaviour, kindness and willingness to support one another. Students returned home with new perspectives, unforgettable memories and stories they are already sharing across our school community.
This journey to Geneva was not just a school trip, but a meaningful learning experience that will continue to influence students long after their return.
