Last week, our Science Department had the pleasure of taking 15 enthusiastic Year 10 students to a post‑16 STEM careers event at New College Durham. The visit was designed for students who are considering A‑level Science in St John’s Sixth Form and exploring future careers in STEM—and they certainly rose to the occasion!
Throughout the day, our students threw themselves into every activity on offer. Highlights included:
- VR welding, hosted by Dyer, where students experienced a hands‑on introduction to engineering techniques in a virtual environment.
- Building pneumatic circuits, giving them valuable insight into mechanical and industrial processes.
- An inspiring talk and Q&A with SMS Technology, where students learned about real‑world applications of digital and engineering skills.
- A fascinating introduction to civil engineering, including the chance to practise surveying skills and understand how engineers shape the world around us.
Their enthusiasm, engagement, and curiosity were fantastic to see. Every student represented St John’s with maturity and interest, making them a real credit to the school.
We are incredibly proud of their passion for science and can’t wait to see how their interests continue to grow as they move toward post‑16 study and beyond. With students like these, the future of STEM at St John’s looks very bright indeed!
