Students from St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form in Bishop Auckland took part in an enriching educational visit to the Auckland Project, deepening their understanding of faith, history, and modern society.
Exploring Britain’s Changing Religious Landscape
During the visit, Year 7 class 7R, accompanied by Mrs Kennedy and Miss Heads, explored how Britain’s religious landscape has evolved over time. The session focused on what it means to live in a diverse and multicultural society today, encouraging pupils to think critically about the world around them.
Learning Through History and Contemporary Art
Students engaged with a range of exhibits at the Faith Museum, where they examined both historical and contemporary collections. A key highlight of the visit was Nicola Green’s thought-provoking Encounters portrait series, which sparked discussion and reflection.
Through these exhibits, pupils were able to explore how beliefs and identities are expressed and represented across different communities.
Hands-On Experiences with Faith Artefacts
The visit offered a valuable hands-on element, as students had the opportunity to handle artefacts from different faith traditions. This interactive experience helped deepen their understanding of how people express their beliefs, values, and cultural practices.
Encouraging Respect and Thoughtful Discussion
Throughout the session, students considered the rich diversity of faiths and beliefs that shape modern communities. The activities encouraged:
- Respect for different perspectives
- Open and thoughtful discussion
- Greater cultural awareness
These experiences support the school’s commitment to fostering inclusive values and global understanding.
