Students at St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form in Bishop Auckland are celebrating the successful completion of both Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and determination across some of the North East’s most scenic landscapes.

A total of 32 Year 9 students successfully completed their Bronze Award Final Expedition in Middleton-in-Teesdale. Throughout the challenging experience, students worked effectively in their groups, supporting one another through tired legs and aching muscles while showing maturity, responsibility and care for their teammates.

The expedition also tested their resilience as strong overnight winds challenged both their tents and their spirits. Despite the conditions, students remained positive and calm, securing their camps safely before enjoying the opportunity to cook together and reflect on the day’s achievements.

The students represented the school superbly throughout the expedition, demonstrating enthusiasm, teamwork and determination while successfully completing the final stage of their Bronze Award journey.

Meanwhile, St John’s Year 10 students celebrated the successful completion of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition in Swaledale.

Beginning just west of Bowes, the group followed sections of the Pennine Way, taking in the stunning scenery of Tan Hill, Keld, Muker, Gunnerside, Reeth and Langthwaite. Along the route, students showed excellent teamwork and navigation skills, tackling challenges with determination and good humour.

One group even experienced an extended version of the expedition after taking a four-mile detour before successfully finding their way back onto the correct route. The experience provided a valuable lesson in problem-solving, one of the core principles of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Students also faced a less welcome challenge during the expedition, with large numbers of midges appearing each evening. Despite the itchy inconvenience, the group remained resilient and positive, supporting one another throughout the journey.

Both expeditions provided students with the opportunity to develop confidence, independence and teamwork skills while exploring the outdoors. The success of the Bronze and Silver groups is a testament to their hard work, perseverance and positive attitude.

Everyone involved should be extremely proud of their achievements, with students from St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form once again demonstrating the values of resilience, responsibility and teamwork that are at the heart of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
