On Thursday, St John’s in Bishop Auckland celebrated the joy of reading and the power of stories to spark imagination, build empathy and bring our community together. At St John’s, we are passionate about fostering a lifelong love of reading — from diving into new worlds and exploring new perspectives to enjoying a peaceful moment with a great book.

Whole‑School Reading Relay

Alongside the fantastic World Book Day celebrations in our LRC, students took part in a whole‑school Reading Relay. Throughout the day, every class read a section of the same short story before passing the reading baton to the next teacher. By the end of the school day, all students had read the same text, creating a shared reading experience that connected the entire St John’s community.

Students also completed tasks and took part in discussions linked to the story, helping them develop comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills while deepening their understanding.

World Book Day

Celebrating World Book Day with Poetry

We also shared Mrs Rose’s World Book Day poem during PREP — a reminder of the magic, adventure and possibility found within every book:

“So open a book and soon you can be,
anything and anywhere you want to be.”

A huge thank you to all our staff and students for making this a truly joyful celebration of reading at St John’s.
